(Access restricted to subscribers.) Normile reports on Japanese scientists' views that they can increase recognition of their research through publication of interdisciplinary, international journals from Japan, pointing out the disadvantage that so many Japanese scientific papers are published in U.S. journals, while the scientists are not party to the review process. It is not clear if such proposed journals would be open access. Normile points out that Japanese research has been widely disseminated through the J-STAGE (Japan Science and Technology Information Aggregator) web site, through which Japan's scientific societies make many of their publications open access; for one journal, Cell Structure and Function, it was stated that 92% of the online readership read the journal freely from abroad. # ( 12:25 PM ) Garrett For Sci/Tech Librarians # ( 12:06 PM ) Garrett DARPA Conqueror # Wednesday, March 10, 2004 ( 2:38 PM ) Garrett Dumping on DARPA # Tuesday, March 09, 2004 ( 9:47 AM ) Garrett The editor of the Neurobiology of Lipids has published an open letter to President Bush concerning the state of science, particularly access to scientific publications (source:SOAN) # ( 9:26 AM ) Garrett "I think you're an encyclopedia salesman" (source: LIBLICENSE-L) # Monday, March 08, 2004 ( 12:16 PM ) Garrett Notes from Internet Librarian by Rita Vine # ( 10:48 AM ) Garrett Towards the 'perfect' lens # ( 10:47 AM ) Garrett The Weblog: An Extremely Democratic Form in Journalism # |
